Putin participates in a parade to mark Russian Navy Day.

While taking part in Saint Petersburg's main naval parade, the Russian president unveils a new doctrine.

On Sunday, Russia observed its Navy Day summer break with naval parades throughout the country.


The main event was held in St Petersburg, the second-largest city in the nation, where President Vladimir Putin was present.


Following the fleet inspection, Putin gave a brief speech in which he declared the navy would soon receive "formidable" hypersonic Zircon cruise missiles. The missiles can outrun air defenses by moving at nine times the sound speed.


Earlier, he put his signature on a new providing accurate naval doctrine that outlines the broad strategic goals of the Russian navy, including its aspirations to become a "great maritime power" with global reach.

According to the doctrine, "the key senior of the USA to continue to control the world's oceans" and the advancement of the NATO mutual defence treaty closer to Russia's borders pose the biggest threats to the country.


The doctrine acknowledges that Russia does not possess sufficient navy bases around the world and that if other soft powers, like diplomatic and economical tools, are exhausted, Russia sometimes use its conventional forces appropriate manner to the predicament in the world's oceans.
